Close to 13 000 runners and walkers gathered in the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town on Tuesday, 09 August 2016 to celebrate National Women’s Day and show their support of PinkDrive at the much anticipated Totalsports Women’s Race.

Mary Fitzgerald Square (Newtown) played host to the Totalsports Women’s Race in Johannesburg. Lebogang Phalula set the course ablaze in the 10km race crossing the finish line first in an awe-inspiring time of 33 minutes 41 seconds. “The race was great,” says a delighted Phalula. “I took part in a race on Sunday, so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel today. My plan was to relax and enjoy the run. I felt really good. I did miss my sister though, but I wish her all the best at the Olympics. I ran for her today. I really enjoy the Totalsports Women’s Race. There is a lot of support on route and the vibe is amazing.” Mapaseka Makhanya came in second, while Yolande Maclean finished third.

Starting at Grand Parade, the 10km Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town was dominated by Zintle Xiniwe. “Today’s race was tough,” says Xiniwe. “I was hoping to run a 34 minute race, but the route wasn’t easy because of the hills. It was nice running with the ladies. In other races the men end up pushing you, but today I could cruise.   A lot of the supporters on route knew who I was. It meant a lot to have their support. I feel good and will definitely be back next year.”   Xiniwe completed the 10km Totalsports Women’s Race in a lightning fast time of 36 minutes 58 seconds. Tanith Maxwell came in second, while Tanya Scott finished third.

The Totalsports Women’s Race supports PinkDrive, a Non-Profit Company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. PinkDrive was present at the Totalsports Women’s Race both in Johannesburg and Cape Town offering FREE clinical breast examinations and educating on the importance of self- breast examinations.
