International ASICS FrontRunners set for AfricanX debut

The 2017 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS has attracted the attention of four international ASICS FrontRunners.

According to Wesley Tam, Core Performance Sports Marketing Executive ASICS SA, the AfricanX Trailrun was discussed at an ASICS FrontRunner meeting in Frankfurt last year.  “Having the International FrontRunners on the start line will add some great value to AfricanX from a competitive perspective.   The athletes will also get a taste of what South Africa has to offer from a trail running perspective.  The men’s team will be strong contenders for the podium.  The second team will consist of International Media.”

German trail runners, Max Kirschbaum and Christian Alles are sure to cause waves this coming weekend, 17 – 19 March 2017.

“Three days, a beautiful landscape and nice people, I wouldn’t miss it,” says Kirschbaum.   “I love nature and I love running.  Our team strength will be balance of performance.  Our goal will be to go as fast as possible.  I’m really looking forward to the experience.”

According to Christian Alles, he is looking forward to experiencing the AfricanX spirit.  “This will be my third visit to South Africa.  It’s a great country.  I’m always in search of new running adventures and can’t wait to have fun with other runners.  I expect to see a lot of fast runners in good shape after the SA summer season.  Max and I would like to run in the top ten, but it’s been quite a long winter in Germany with a lot of snow.  Speed training was not really possible in the last month.  We will however give our best.”

Robert Kampczyk, another keen trail runner from Germany, will form part of the ASICS FrontRunner Media Team.  “I enjoy trail running because flat is boring,” laughs Kampczyk.  “Every year I like to travel to a country that I’ve not yet seen.  South Africa is currently a white field on my globe, so of course I said yes when the opportunity arose.  I’m looking forward to having a cool time, while running in the heat.  I’ll definitely be taking a lot of photographs.  After the race we will visit Cape Town and run up Signal Hill and Table Mountain.”

The 2017 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS boasts a strong local field.

Teams setting the pace in the men’s race will include:  Kane Reilly with Thabang Madiba, Givemore Mudzinganyama with Edwin Sesipi, Nicholas Rupanga with Johnny Young and Chris Strydom with Rory Scheiffer.

The women’s race will be dominated by:  Landie Greyling with Megan Mackenzie, Ashleigh Simonis with Tish Jones, Leilani Scheffer with Carla Van Huyssteen, Claire Horner with Keelyn Van Breda and Chantel Nienaber with Katya Soggot.

‘Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award’:  Introduced in 2010, one year after AfricanX’s inception, the award was founded in memory of Sanet Wentzel (Oudtshoorn), an AfricanX participant who passed away tragically at the end of 2009 after being knocked down by a car during a morning training run.  The award also honours current runners who persevere irrespective of the adversity that they face.

Trail runners taking part in the 2017 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS are encouraged to send their ‘Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award’ nominations (with a short motivation) to dom@stillwatersports.com
